Southern Soul Spinners at Soul Summit

The always fun dance party, Soul Summit, presents guests DJ's Southern Soul Spinners tonight at the Double Door in Wicker Park.  This free show will be a great way to end the night.  I've never been disappointed with the Soul Summit shows. They play amazing soul and dance music from all over.

Juan Angel Chavez and Glenn Goldberg at Linda Warren Projects

Sculptor Juan Angel Chavez and painter Glenn Goldberg have shows opening tonight at Linda Warren Projects in the West Loop.  Chavez will be presenting, "Gone", a series  using raw materials from a 19th century Indiana barn that was shot at and burned.  I've viewed many his installations over the years, including ones at the Hyde Park Art Center, the new DePaul Art Museum, and the National Museum of Mexican Art.  They all had in  common the use of found materials and signs but were all put together in vastly different ways.  Even though his work is referred to as sculpture, you can enter many of his installations and activate different storylines as you experience the work.

Goldberg will be showing paintings exploring patterns and beautiful visual imagery touching on mandalas and tantric energy.

Matthew Hoffman at Beauty and Brawn

Matthew Hoffman is a man of many talents.  With work ranging from installations, the positive "You Are Beautiful" campagin, drawings and more, his work never ceases to amaze.  One of the projects Matthew has been working on is text based work cut out of wood and paper with a jigsaw.  Tonight Saturday he will be showing 100 different handcut 8 1/2" x 11" "prints'.  Each will be in an edition of 50, which equals 1,000 prints total.    This should be a really fun show.

CAKE - The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo

Today Saturday is the kickoff for CAKE - The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo.  Nearly two years in the planning, this comics festival will feature work by nearly 200 exhibitors from around the country and Canada.  There's an excellent lineup of special guests and for the panels as well.  More info and schedules at their site.

I love the poster design for CAKE as well.  Chicago artist Laura Park drew it featuring city animals, including roaches rowing the barge and a mayoral rat holding up a wild onion, which is where the word "Chicago" comes from.

The Chicago Design Museum

A large pop-up art space titled the Chicago Design Museum will be open all this month.  Tonight Monday will be an opening reception featuring 5 shows within their space in Humboldt Park.

One the shows there I'm looking forward to is Fresh Produced: Exploring the Craft of Handpainted Signage, which will focus on reinterpretations of the kind of large scale handpainted paper signs you see in the windows of grocery stores.  More info on all five shows is posted here.  The space will also feature a store called Ignorance & Ambition.

Northern Soul

Chicago MC, Robust, has a new music video out this week titled, Northern Soul. Filmed on the north side of Chicago in the heavily diverse Albany Park neighborhood, the video features Robust in iconic spots throughout the area.  Filmed by German video director Arvid Wuensch, the track was produced by Galapagos 4 label-mate Meaty Ogre and includes cuts by DJ ALO.  This is a preview to Robust's new album, Fillin in the Potholes, which is coming out later this year.
