Fun time at Intuit

One of my all time favorite artists, Karl Wirsum, curated a selection of art from the collection of Intuit opening tonight Friday.  Seeing their collection through his curatorial eye should make for an appealing show.

There'll also be a show of over 50 hand built radios and drawings by self-taught artist George Kagan.

If you've never been to Intuit, tonight would be an excellent time to go.  They also have a permanent installation of a recreation of outsider artist Henry Darger's one-room apartment, which was salvaged several years ago.  It contains many items from his studio including his original art supplies, fireplace mantel, photos, and artwork.

Art from Chicago's Streets at the Harold Washington Library Center

I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to curate a street art show for the Chicago Public Library downtown.  There are several exhibit cases with examples of street art (stickers, drawings, paintings, and stencils) by 40 Chicago artists including Saro, Goons, Cosbe, the Viking, You Are Beautiful, Nick Adam, Klepto, Pooper, Clam Nation, Radah, Don't Fret, Left Hand Wave, Rejoice and more.

There are two cases with 25 Chicago graffiti magazines and zines from the past 20 years including issues of Chicago Rocks, Volume 1, Caught in the Middle, Grime Time, Pound the Pavement, Crime Pays, Fly Paper, and Klip Art. This is a preview of a larger Chicago graffiti magazine show I'm working on for the next year.
The main portion of the show is a 20-foot wide exhibition case by Chicago street artists Nice-One and Brooks Golden.  Incorporating members of DIPSTK (a fictional heavy metal band that Brooks created), this installation features the band backstage after a concert sleeping off a sugar high while giving privy to their dreams.  Brooks and Nice-One did a phenomenal job creating the iconic work that fills this huge case.

Here's a preview video of Nice-One and Brooks Golden at work shot by Andrew Roddewig...

Ricky Powell at Klughaus

If you're in NYC this weekend I would recommend checking out, "Oh No He Didn't!", a show of photographs by Ricky Powell.  Known for his street shots taken in the 80's and 90's, as well as his portraits of iconic New Yorkers like Andy Warhol and the Beastie Boys, this show will include both classic shots by Ricky as well as never before seen images.

Juan Angel Chavez and Glenn Goldberg at Linda Warren Projects

Sculptor Juan Angel Chavez and painter Glenn Goldberg have shows opening tonight at Linda Warren Projects in the West Loop.  Chavez will be presenting, "Gone", a series  using raw materials from a 19th century Indiana barn that was shot at and burned.  I've viewed many his installations over the years, including ones at the Hyde Park Art Center, the new DePaul Art Museum, and the National Museum of Mexican Art.  They all had in  common the use of found materials and signs but were all put together in vastly different ways.  Even though his work is referred to as sculpture, you can enter many of his installations and activate different storylines as you experience the work.

Goldberg will be showing paintings exploring patterns and beautiful visual imagery touching on mandalas and tantric energy.

Matthew Hoffman at Beauty and Brawn

Matthew Hoffman is a man of many talents.  With work ranging from installations, the positive "You Are Beautiful" campagin, drawings and more, his work never ceases to amaze.  One of the projects Matthew has been working on is text based work cut out of wood and paper with a jigsaw.  Tonight Saturday he will be showing 100 different handcut 8 1/2" x 11" "prints'.  Each will be in an edition of 50, which equals 1,000 prints total.    This should be a really fun show.

CAKE - The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo

Today Saturday is the kickoff for CAKE - The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo.  Nearly two years in the planning, this comics festival will feature work by nearly 200 exhibitors from around the country and Canada.  There's an excellent lineup of special guests and for the panels as well.  More info and schedules at their site.

I love the poster design for CAKE as well.  Chicago artist Laura Park drew it featuring city animals, including roaches rowing the barge and a mayoral rat holding up a wild onion, which is where the word "Chicago" comes from.

One the shows there I'm looking forward to is Fresh Produced: Exploring the Craft of Handpainted Signage, which will focus on reinterpretations of the kind of large scale handpainted paper signs you see in the windows of grocery stores.  More info on all five shows is posted here.  The space will also feature a store called Ignorance & Ambition.

Chicago MC, Robust, has a new music video out this week titled, Northern Soul. Filmed on the north side of Chicago in the heavily diverse Albany Park neighborhood, the video features Robust in iconic spots throughout the area.  Filmed by German video director Arvid Wuensch, the track was produced by Galapagos 4 label-mate Meaty Ogre and includes cuts by DJ ALO.  This is a preview to Robust's new album, Fillin in the Potholes, which is coming out later this year.

Feels so right

Brand spanking new Chicago R&B/funk record label, Cherries Records, released their inaugural 7" vinyl single this past week. Featuring two tracks, Feels So Right and Love's Gone Wrong by Cermakk and Doug Shorts, this record is limited to 300 copies and is now nearly sold out.  A few more copies have just been restocked at Dusty Groove America/Chicago.  There may also still be some left at People's Records/Detroit, Friends of Sound/Austin, Doc's Records/Fort Worth, Revolver/Phoenix, Phonica Records/London, or Soul Palladium/France.

Cherries is the love child between DJ/producers Andrew Brearley and Sheila Hernando, better known as Meaty Ogre and Shred One.  They have more releases in store for 2012.  I can't wait.
